EXHIBITION 09

A new collection of award winning paintings, drawings, sculptures and other works will be showcased from July 19 to August 22 during the National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition scheduled for the National Gallery in Kingston. The exhibition, which represents the combined efforts of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) and the National Gallery with sponsors  Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) and Digicel Jamaica, will see more than 70 new artists being showcased among a total of 218 award winning works.

An increase in the number of entries received this year is reported by JCDC Visual Arts Specialist, Sana Rose Savage, who says that more than 500 entrants submitted more than 900 works collectively across all parishes. The number of entrants represents an increase over last year’s amount of approximately 10 percent, which may be attributed to a number of sensitization workshops that were held from March to May this year.

In addition to the exposure the artists will gain during the national exhibition, travelling exhibitions in Port Maria, Montego Bay and Mandeville will be staged between September and December. The public will also have the opportunity to select the winner of the Viewers’ Vote Prize by visiting the Gallery and completing the ballot forms provided.

The official opening and awards reception will take place on Sunday, July 19 at the National Gallery of Jamaica starting at 3pm. Interested persons may view the exhibition during the gallery’s regular opening hours; Tuesdays to Thursdays -10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fridays -10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
