June 1993 was the birth month for the compilation of various artistes by renowned Jamaican record company VP Records. To this day, that compilation is still the biggest seller for the label, with July 27, 2018 the official date set for the release of the Reggae Gold’s 25th Anniversary Edition.
“Our goal for Reggae Gold is to present the best in reggae music each year. We have done our best to achieve that for 25 years. This year, our goals can be summarized as deepening our roots in the music and expanding the vision for the future,” Vp Record’s Vice President of Marketing, Aaron Talbert disclosed.
The original cast of entertainers chosen to represent Reggae’s finest in the 1993 first edition of Reggae Gold include Garnett Silk with Hello Mama Africa Sanchez with Fall in Love, Beres Hammond with Sweetness, Terror Fabulous with Position, just to name a few.
Commercial radio in the United States has been impacted by several songs that made the Reggae Gold compilation. Such songs inclusive of Sean Paul’s Gimmie The Light and Temperature, and Tanto Metro and Devonte’s Give it to Her and Everyone Falls in Love which all received extensive radio play internationally.
Since the release of Reggae Gold in 1993, the best selling edition came in 2003 with tracks such as Pon Di River Pon Di Bank by Elephant Man, Get Busy by Sean Paul, Hey Sexy Lady by Shaggy and No Letting Go Remix by Wayne Wonder featuring international R&B sensation LL Cool J.
The 25th edition of Reggae Gold will contain two discs, with a total of nineteen tracks. Some of these tracks include Medication by Damian Marley featuring Stephen Marley, Walking Trophy by Hood Celebrityy, Risk it All by Jah Cure and Phyllisia Ross, Stay So by Busy Signal, Ghetto Paradise by Chronixx and Black Woman by Queen Ifrica.
Disc Two will feature a mix by Rory StoneLove with prominent dancehall and reggae hits from the 1990s such as When I Hold You Tonight by General Degree, Fresh Vegetable by Tony Rebel, Tight Up Skirt by Red Rat, Benz and Bimma by Bounty Killer and Batty Rider by Buju Banton.
