RJR Gleaner Sports Foundation’s National Sportsmen and Sports women for the year competition are categorized into two different sections. Athletes from different fields across the board of sport, who worked tremendously throughout the previous year, are nominated to be crowned for the year. 2017-2018 is no different from the years the when by. Omar McLeod and Alia Atkinson who were crowned the RJR Gleaner Sport Foundation’s National Sportsman and Sportswoman for the year , which was held on January 19,2018 ,at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston. Both athletes did exceptional in the Olympics. Omar McLeod is the world 110 meters hurdles gold medalist. He ended the year 20117 winning nine of his 12 races in the 110 meter hurdles and was unbeaten in the 60 meter hurdles with six won; also he has received the RJR Gleaner Honour Award’s 2017 special ward for sports.
Alia Atkinson first black woman swimmer who won the World Championship title 2017. In 2014 Alia first won the title RJR Gleaner Sport Foundation’s National Sportsman and Sportswoman for the year, now she made a massive improvement in the World Championship. Gleaner Iconic Award went to veteran sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown.
