Jamaicans turned out in their numbers at the National Stadium on Sunday December 3rd to witness the unveiling of the statue of the greatest sprinter in Jamaica, Usain Bolt.
The Prime Minister of Jamaica the Hon. Andrew Holness, unveiled the statue during a special ceremony held at emancipation park, New Kingston. He called for young people across the world to be inspired by the many great accomplishments of the Living legend, Usain Bolt.
The Prime Minister expressed how proud himself and Jamaicans are of what Usain Bolt has accomplished and then went further to elaborate on what a great honor it is to have a country erect a statue in your honor and implored the young generation to follow in Usain’s gigantic footsteps.
Bolt expressed his gratitude towards his parents on the way he was brought up, and how they have helped him to mature into a person who is humble, despite of his standing in society.
He credited his achievements and humility to his ability to stay focused on the goals at hand, fueled by the guidance of his parents and Coach Glen Mills, Usain reflects on where is coming from, “A barefooted youth from the country”, who would never expected that he would have his own statue erected in the National Stadium of Jamaica.
Among those in attendance were former Prime Ministers Edward Seaga, PJ Patterson and many noble figures local and international sports personalities. Other living Jamaican sprint legens such as Asafa Powell also attended, as well as Victor Lopez, president of the North America Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association, who all turned out to support the legend Usain Bolt as he experiences life after retirement.
