2008 Kicks Off Tomorrow


The Flashpoint Film Festival 2008 is only one day away and will be hosted at the historic Port Royal from Thursday, June 5 – Sunday, June 8. Anticipation is high for this year’s festival, featuring more Jamaican films than ever before. Check out the full film schedule at www.flashpointfestival.com.

The 2008 Flashpoint Film Festival launched on Tuesday May 20, has already taken up residence in its home in Port Royal after it moved from the Caves in Negril, Westmoreland. The festival’s new home is now at Fort Charles and the Historic Naval Hospital respectively. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust, (JNHT), is now backing the Flashpoint Film Festival fully and in giving its support will be launching a new multimedia centre at the Historic Naval Hospital. This multimedia centre will be capable of screening videos and other multimedia projections. The centre will also be able to host seminars and workshops. During the run of the festival short films will be shown in the new centre.

Festival Updates:

  • Tickets are available at: Extras, Island Art and Framing, Susie’s Bakery, www.islandstubs.com.
  • A Shuttle Bus Service is available, provided by JUTA. Buses leave every hour from the JUTA headquarters at 49 Lady Musgrave Road to the festival every day. There will also be 24-hour secured free parking at JUTA headquarters. Only JA$ 750.00. Check the website for more details.

Learn about all the new film additions on the website, including: Rent A Rasta, an incisive documentary exploring the mores of sex tourism in Jamaica, focusing on the dreadlocks gigolos of the north coast; and Man Free, a cinematic glimpse into the beautiful struggle of modern Jamaicans coping with the beauty and contradictions of Jamaica land they love.

The Candy Shop is
Jamaica’s first teenage comedy movie. The story follows 3 high school graduates whose search of a real lap-dance takes them to a grimey downtown strip club, the Candy Shop where they get much more than they bargained for. The film explores friendship, loyalty and teen sexuality.
